Chapter 12 - Energy Flashcards
What is potential energy?
Stored energy that may not cause changes now, but could in the future.
What is electromagnetic energy?
A combination of electrical and magnetic energy.
What is kinetic energy?
Energy due to motion
What is chemical energy?
The energy of electrons that form bonds between atoms in molecules.
What is energy?
The ability to do work or cause change.
What is vibration?
The back and forth motion of an object.
What is reflection?
When light bounces off an object.
What is refraction?
The bending of light.
What is translucent?
Let’s some light pass through, but not all.
What is transparent?
Let’s nearly all light pass through.
What is opaque?
Does not let any light through.
What is mechanical energy?
Potential and kinetic energy combined.
What does the law of conservation of energy state?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change form or be transferred.
Name and describe 2 types of potential energy.
Gravitational - energy depends on objects position relative to earth.
Elastic - energy present when things are bent or stretched.
What is the relationship between potential and kinetic energy?
It’s an inverse relationship. They can both be present in one object at the same time.
What 2 things determine the amount of kinetic energy an object has?
Speed and mass
Which has more kinetic energy, a beach ball or basketball?
A basketball because it has more mass.
What energy transformation occurs when a toaster toasts a piece of bread?
Electric to thermal
What energy transformation occurs when the buzzer on your alarm goes off?
Vibration creating sound waves.
What kind of electric transformation occurs when the sun shines on the earth?
Nuclear energy to electromagnetic energy.
What kind of energy transformation occurs when plants photo Synthesize?
Chemical energy
What kind energy transformation occurs when a campfire burns?
Chemical to thermal
Why can’t sound travel through space?
No molecules or particles to move.
What are individual parts of white light?
All colors of visible light are mixed to form white light….red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
Compare and contrast pitch and volume.
Volume is the amount of energy in a wave, pitch is the number of compressions.
On an energy spectrum, what is the order of energy from least to greatest?
Gamma rays, X-rays, ultra violet rays, microwaves, radio waves, visible light
What are the two components of a wave?
Wavelength and amplitude
