Chapter 12 - Drugs and Chemical Classes Flashcards
Agonist
A drug that causes a physiologic response once it reacts with a receptor
Agonist-Antagonsit
A drug that blocks a receptor. It may provide a partial agonist activity, but it also prevents an agonist from exerting its full effects
Analgesia
A state in which pain is controlled or not perceived
Anaphylaxis
A life-threatening allergic reaction
Anesthesia
A process in which pain is prevented during a procedure
Angioedema
Swelling of the tissues, including the dermal layer; often found in and around the mouth, tongue, and lips
Antagonist
A drug that does not cause a physiologic response when it binds with a receptor
Conscious Sedation
A medication or combination of medications that allows a patient to undergo what could be an unpleasant experience by producing an altered level of consciousness but not complete anesthesia. The goal is for the patient to breathe spontaneously and maintain his or her own airway
Contraindication
Use of a drug for a condition when it is not advisable
Deep Venous Thrombosis
A blood clot that forms in the deep venous system of the pelvis or legs. This may progress to a pulmonary embolism
Dosage
The amount of medication that can be safely given for the average person for a specified condition
Dysrhythmia
An abnormal heat rhythm
Eczema
A disorder of the skin characterized by inflammation, itching, blisters, and scales
Gastic Lavage
A procedure commonly known as “stomach pumping” in which the stomach is flushed with water; typically used to treat overdose or poisoning
Hemarturia
Blood found in urine
