content analysis
approach to analysis of documents and texts that seeks to quantify content in terms of predetermined categories in a systematic and replicable manner. there is also qualitative content analysis.
semiotics
approach to analysis of documents and other materials that emphasizes the importance of signs and symbols, seeking out their deeper meaning and exploring their intended effects.
hermeneutics
approach to the interpretation of texts that emphasizes the need to understand them from the perspective of their authors.
ethnomethodology
sociological perspective concerned with the way social order is established and maintained through talk and interaction.
4 criteria for assessing quality of documents
- authenticity
- credibility
- representativeness
- meaning
signs
term used in semiotics. each sign has two parts:
1. the signifier (manifestation of the sign)
2. the signified (deeper meaning to which the signifier relates)
adjacency pair
two kinds of talk activity that are linked together. ex: invitation and response, question and answer.
