The process of obtaining existing, readily available data (age, gender and racial distribution, vital statistics, socioeconomic characteristics, community institutions, etc.).

The process of developing data that do not already exist, through interaction with community members, individuals, families or groups ( values and sentiments, norms, goals, problem-solving process, power, leadership, influence structures, etc.).
