Sexually explicit definition
A term used to describe media depictions of individuals engaging in various kinds of sexual activities
Four major themes of x-rated videos
Domination - sexual control of one person over another
Reciprocity - consensual sex
Exploitation - coercion of one over another, or use of status to make another perform sexually
Autoeroticism - self stimulation
More than half of all scenes in X rated films feature themes of domination or exploitation, usually men over women

Sexual Arousal
A number of studies have demonstrated that sexually oriented media content does tend to sexually arouse the viewer or user.
Differences between genders
Different individuals are turned on by different sexual stimuli.
Sexual arousal is sometimes learned
Changes in values and attitudes/desensitization
Repeated exposure usually results in desensitization - a change in values and attitudes
Desensitization occurs over time as a previously taboo behavior is gradually accepted because of repeated exposure.
Changes in behavior/disinhibition
Ppl learn when they consume
Can be constructive or destructive
Disinhibition causes changes in behavior/actions similarly to how desensitization causes changes in attitudes and values.
The individual is less inhibited to perform/imitate the previously viewed behavior on screen.
At an extreme, disinhibition may reduce moral judgement constraints and result in a violent sex crime
Effects of Erotica on aggression
Viewing arousing erotic material tends to enhance aggressive tendencies in individuals.
The process by which this effect occurs is known as excitation transfer.
Any states/feelings that happen after arousal are intensified

Legal standards (obscenity)
Porn is not always considered obscene.
Obscenity is a legal term defined by the u.s. Supreme Court
Three criteria for something to be considered obscene
Material appeals to a prurient (shameful, sick, morbid, or lustful)) interest in sex.
The material is patently offensive/beyond the contemporary community standards regarding depictions of sexual content or activity
The material as a whole lacks “serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value”

The results showed that adolescents who engage in sexual activity seek out media with sexual content and those who are exposed to more sexual content are more likely to engage in sexual behaviors.
Portrayals of sexual content combined with:
Violent acts
Seen more recently than in the past
Seen in magazines such as penthouse and playboy and in slasher horror movies
