Chapter 1.2 Flashcards
Scientific Method
a standard method used by scientists for solving problems
Important science skills
identify, plan, record observations and data and interpret. All done Correctly.
independent variable
variable which CAUSES a change in another
dependent variable
variable that WILL CHANGE in response to another
controlled variable
kept THE SAME within the experiment
control
this is what you compare your results to at the end of the experiment. The initial measurement.
Parts of a good experimental design
materials, steps, directions, only change one variable at a time, multiple trails, consistent measurements
types if data
quantitative, qualitatitve
SI base units
meter, kilogram, second
SI derived units
combinations of SI base units (for example, volume=cm3)
accuracy
how close your measurements are to the “true” value
precision
how close measurements are to each other
pie chart
used for percentages, to show parts of a whole
bar graph
to compare the same types of data for several different items (the items on x-axis can not be numbered)
line graphs
continuous change within a set of data.
