Chapter 12 Flashcards
What are dependent clauses used as?
They can be used as adverbial modifiers, in which case they function as adjectives to answer questions such as why, when, where? and which normally modify the verb in the sentence.
Dependent clauses are…
The dependent/subordinate clause is a part of the sentence which cannot stand alone. The addition of a dependent clause makes the sentence complicated.
They work ass adverbial modifiers (in some cases) and as adjectival modifiers (in other cases)
Subordinate conjunctions/clause markers
Connect main clauses to subordinate clauses - they do not have to be in Latin the first word of a clause.
Word order rules -
once a dependent clause starts , the main clause does not interrupt it . Even if one dependent clause interrupts another in a sentence , the clause that interrupts must finish before the interrupted clause can continue
Datives with adjectives
The dative is often used with adjectives meaning friendly , unfriendly , similar , dissimilar , faithful , suitable , fit , equal , near , etc. This use corresponds to the English idiom in most cases.
The adjective is then “to us” or “for us”
“friendly to us” “the place is suitable for a temple”
