Chapter 12 Flashcards
Four Hemispheres of the Adult Brain
Cerebral Hemisphere, Diencephalon, Brain Stem, Cerebellum
Gray matter is ______ neurons and _____ ______
Unmyelinated. Cell bodies
White matter is MOSTLY _______ and some _______ neurons
Myelinated. Unmyelinated.
Ridges =
Gyri
Shallow Grooves =
Sulci
Deep Grooves =
Fissures
Cerebral cortex is the ________ ________ of the brain
Executive Suite. The site of conscious mind: Awareness, sensory perception, voluntary motor initiation, communication, memory storage, understanding
What acts as a relay station for information coming into Cortex. Also helps to mediate sensations, motor activities, cortical arousal, learning, memory
Thalamus
What is the main visceral and control center that is vital to homeostasis
Hypothalamus
Three sections of the brain stem from high to low.
Midbrain, Pons, Medulla Oblongata
Function of Medulla Oblongata
Generate respiratory rhythm, and control rate and depth of breathing
What does the cerebellum do
fine tunes motor activity as follows
5 Step Cerebellum process -
- Receive impulses from cerebral cortex.
- Receive signals from proprioceptors throughout body
- Pathways continuously inform cerebellum of body postion
- Cerebellar cortex calculates the best way to coordinate contraction
- Sends blueprint of coordinated movement to cerebral motor cortex
Four types of brain waves
Alpha, Beta, Theta, Delta
Range of Alpha Waves and state
“Idling” and 8-13 Hz
