Chapter 12 Flashcards
1
Q
Explain the Waburg effect?
A
The tumour cell shifts its metabolic phenotype resulting in an increase in glycolysis. Glucose is converted to lactate and secreted from the cells rather than being completely oxidised to CO2 via oxidative phosphorylation in the mitocondria.

Q
What are the suspected main reasons for neoplastic cells to shift towards aerobic glycolysis?
A
- Even though it is less efficient in ATP production pr glucose molecules, the ATP production is more rapid by glycolysis. It could be a way to meet the increased demand in the tumour cell.
- IT could be due to adaptation to hypoxic conditions
- The pathway serve to create a balance in the cells need for macromolecules- as by not entering the TCA cycle biocynthesis of of other compounds such as fatty acids and AA remains normal
