Q

What is the third step in the wastewater treatment?

A

Secondary Treatment. A biological treatment process removes organic matter from the water. By adding oxygen, micro-organisms grow and eat the organic matter. Remaining solids sink to the bottom of the clarifier.

Q

What is the fifth step in the wastewater treatment?

A

Solids Processing. Primary solids from the settling tank and secondary solids from the clarifier are sent to the digester. MIcroorganisms use organic matter as food and convert it into methane gas. Methane gas can be used for electricity and heating. 15 days later, bio-solids are incinerated, used as fertilizers, or sent to the landfill.

Q

What is a septic system?

A

A treatment plant in rural areas that treat wastewater on a much smaller scale. Includes a septic tank and drainage bed. Solids are trapped in the septic tank where bacteria slowly digests the waste. Liquid flows to the drainage bed where it slowly soaks into the ground.
