Q

How can we test the turbidity of water?

A

You can see the turbidity of water by looking at it. Scientists measure turbidity by lowering a two colored dial into the water until it is no longer visible. Then, they measure the depth.

Q

How can we test the temperature of water?

A

Warm water has less dissolved oxygen than cold water. Increasing water temperature artificially is called thermal pollution. Thermal pollution reduces the quality of water.

Q

How can you test the acidity of water?

A

Water is acidic if it has sulfuric acid or nitric acid. We measure the acidity of water by using an indicator. Water is acidic if it’s pH is below 7 and basic if it’s pH is above 7. Good quality water usually has a pH between 6 5 and 8.5.

Q

How can we measure the salinity of water?

A

A conductivity apparatus tests whether a solution can carry an electric current. Salt water is a good conductor of electricity. Testing a water sample for conductivity will tell you whether the solution contains salt.

Q

How can you test water for other dissolved substances?

A

Other dissolved substances include chlorine, nitrates, iron and copper, and calcium and magnesium. Chemically treated paper strips can show whether or not a chemical is present in the water.
