Chapter 11.1-11.3- Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
Trait
A specific characteristic of an individual
Gene
A sequence of DNA that codes for a protein, and thus determines a trait—> factor that determines a trait
Allele
One of a number of different forms of a gene
Hybrid
Offspring of crosses between parents with different traits
True Breeding
Every generation makes the same characteristics
Homozygous
Having two identical alleles for a particular gene
Heterozygous
Having two different alleles for a particular gene
Phenotype
Physical characteristic of an organism
Genotype
Genetic makeup of an organism
Dominant Allele
Allele that always shows itself in the offspring
Recessive Allele
Allele that only shows itself when the dominant allele is not present.
Segregation
The separation of alleles during gamete formation (meiosis)
Independent Assortment
A principle discovered by Mendel that states that genes for different traits can segregate independently during the formation of gametes
Incomplete Dominance
Situation in which one allele is not completely dominant over another allele
Codominance
Situation in which the phenotypes produced by both alleles are completely expressed
