Chapter 11 : Waves Flashcards
What is a wave?
A wave is made up of repeated motion at regular intervals that transfers energy from one place to another.
What is one oscillation?
One oscillation is the path of the ball from A to B and back to A.
What are the two types of waves?
Transverse and Longitudinal waves.
What is a transverse wave?
Transverse waves are waves that travel perpendicular to the direction of the medium’s particle vibration.
Name 2 examples of transverse waves.
Electromagnetic waves
Water waves
What is a longitudinal wave?
Longitudinal waves are waves that travel parallel to the direction of the medium’s particle vibration.
Name an example of a longitudinal wave.
Sound waves
Define amplitude.
The maximum displacement from the rest position.
- Height of the crest or trough
- SI Unit: meter
Define wavelength.
The distance between two successive crests or two successive troughs or the distance between any two identical points on successive waves.
