Chapter 11: Tooth Selection Flashcards
Provides upper lip support:
Both tooth and denture base
What portion of canine should be more prominent due to the labial placement of the tooth?
Cervical portion
Bone type in maxillary anterior residual ridge:
mostly cancellous bone, absorbs quickly in response to force
Placement of incisal edges of mandibular teeth
should not be placed forward of a plane perpendicular to the center of the labial vestibule, and under no circumstances should they be positioned over the anterior land area of the cast, leads to cantilever effect and instability
When not to have vertical overlap of the anterior teeth:
nonbalanced type of occlusion
What determines amount of incisal guidance?
Degree of hor and vertical overlap
incisal guidance should not lead to:
posterior teeth discluding in excursive movements (don’t want Christensens phenomenon)
no more than __d incisal guidance greater than the anterior-posterior angulation of the plane
of occlusion.

Discluding in excursive movements:
Christensens phenomenon
To minimize incisal guidance:
decrease vertical overlap, increase horizontal
To minimize separation of posterior teeth in excursive moves:
decrease steepness of incisal guidance
When should anterior teeth contact lightly?
protrusive or working moves, required for tearing off bits of food, incising
“Kissing contact” should be achieved when
in protrusive movement (check on my dentures) - it seems theoretically easier to align the mandibular in this manner. Why don’t we?
TF? The need for an overlap is often not obvious during the maxillomandibular records appointment
T
How to set the condylar inclination of the articulator:
make protrusive or lateral interocclusal records to
man denture teeth should not be placed beyond this point:
point at which the residual ridge
begins to slope up toward the retromolar pad.
Mandibular posterior teeth to be eliminated if not enough room:
first premolar or second molar, remove first premolar for better mastication
Non balanced occlusion mandibular posterior tooth placement:
flat occlusal plane, the long axes perpendicular to the plane of occlusion
