Chapter 1.1 The world of the microscope Flashcards
What is the formula for the magnification of a microscope?
Magnification= Size of image/ size of real object
What can light microscopes magnify up to and what is their resolving power?
Light microscopes magnify up to about x2000, and have a resolving power of about 20nm.
What is resolving power of a microscope?
he resolving power of an objective lens is measured by its ability to differentiate two lines or points in an object. The greater the resolving power, the smaller the minimum distance between two lines or points that can still be distinguished.
What can electron microscopes magnify up to and what is their resolving power?
Electron microscopes magnify up to about x2,000,000, and have a resolving power of around 0.2nm.
Name all the parts of a light microscope.
- Eyepiece
- Coarse focus
- Objective lens
- Fine focus
- Stage
- Slide
- Light
What is the function of the eyepiece?
The function of the eyepiece in a microscope is to convert the real- enlarged-intermediate-image from the objective into an enlarged-virtual-image.
What is the function of the coarse focus?
You use it to move the objective lenses toward or away from the specimen.
What is the function of the objective lens?
The purpose of the objective lens is to gather light and enhance magnification.
What is the function of the fine focus?
knob used to fine-tune the focus of a specimen in conjunction with the coarse focus.
