Executive Order
Formal orders to government or agency to carry the force of law issued by the president to direct action by the federal bureaucracy
Executive privilege
The right to keep executive communications confidential, especially if they relate to national goverment
Executive Memorandum
Less powerful formal order that doesn’t carry the force of law to do a particular course of action
Impoundment
A decision by the president not to spend the money appropriated by congress, now prohibited by federal law
Line item veto
Presidential power to strike or remove specific items from a spending bill without vetoing the entire bill; was declared unconstitutional
Chief of staff
Head of White House staff
Executive office of the president
A cluster of presidential staff agencies that help the president carry out his or her responsibilities
Office of management and budget
A presidential staff that serves as a clearing house for budgetary request and improvements for government agencies
Presidential support score
The percentage of times the president wins on key votes in congress
Mandate
A presidents claim of broad public support
Political capital
The amount of overall public approval the president can use for to win support for major decisions and proposals
Rally point
A rise in the president public approval ratings that follow a crisis as the public gets behind the executive office
