Chapter 1.1: States of matter and kinetic particle theory Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter is a substance that has mass and occupies space.
What are the properties of boiling?
occurs only at boiling point
occurs throughout the liquid
occurs rapidly
What are the properties of evaporation?
occurs at temperatures below boiling point
occurs only at the surface of liquids
occurs slowly
What is sublimation?
It is a process by which a solid’s particles overcome the forces of attraction between other particles and escape directly to the vapour phase
What occurs when a a solid is melting to form a liquid or when a liquid is boiling to form a gas?
Temperature remains constant, heat energy is absorbed by the particles to overcome the forces of attraction between particles.
What occurs when a gas is condensing to form a liquid or when a liquid is freezing to form a solid?
Temperature remains constant, particles release heat to the surroundings . Forces of attraction become strong enough to pull particles closer together until they assume the arrangement of liquid particles. (swap words around for solids and liquids freezing)
