Chapter 11: Solutions & Colloids Flashcards
What are the defining traits to solutions?
homogeneous, the physical state of the solution is typically the same as the solvent, components are dispersed on a molecular scale, a dissolved solute will not separate or dissolve from the solvent, and the composition can be varied continuously.
What is a spontaneous process?
A spontaneous process is the formation of a solution. It is a process that occurs under special conditions without the requirement of energy from an external source
What is dissociation?
When ionic compounds dissociate in water, the ions in a solid separate and disperse uniformly throughout the solution because the water molecules surround and solvate the ions.
What formulas are not dependent on temperature?
molality and mole fraction
Molarity formula
mol of solute / L of solution
Molality formula
mol of solute / kg of solvent
Mole fraction formula
mol of solute / mol of solute + mol of solution
Parts by mass formula
mass of solute / mass of solution
Parts by volume formula
volume of solute / volume of solution
Raolt’s law (vapor pressure)
change in P = mole fraction times pressure. after calculating, you will need to subtract the value you got from the pressure
Boiling point formula
change in Tb = Kb times molality
Freezing point formula
change in Tf = Kf times molality
Osmotic pressure formula
pressure = MRT
what is a colliod?
a colloid is a solution that is mostly homogeneous, and doesn’t necessarily effect colligative properties the same way. The molecules in a colloid are suspended, therefore you cannot see the individual particles.
What is the only Colloidial system not possible?
gas to gas
