Chapter 11 - Reactions of Metals Flashcards
What is a displacement reaction?
A reaction in which a metal converts the ion of another metal to the neutral atom.
What is an activity series for metals?
A list of the metals in order of increasing or decreasing reactivity.
What does oxidation mean?
Loss of electrons.
What are the common reactions of metals with?
- Oxygen
- Water
- Dilute acids
- Cations of other metals (displacement)
What are electron transfer reactions?
Reactions in which one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another. REDOX REACTION!!
What does reduction mean?
Gain of electrons.
Why do we write half equations?
To identify oxidation and reduction reactions.
What is an oxidant?
A substance that brings about oxidation of another substance and is itself reduced.
What is a reductant?
A substance that brings about reduction of another substance and is itself oxidised.
What is an oxidation number?
The charge the atom of that element would carry if the molecule or ion were completely ionic.
What oxidation number do elements in their elemental state have?
0.
What is the oxidation number in simple ions?
The same as the charge on the ion.
What are the oxidation numbers in a polyatomic ion?
Oxidation numbers must add up to the charge of the polyatomic ion.
What must the oxidation numbers in a neutral compound add up to?
0.
What is hydrogens usual oxidation number?
+1
