What is personality
the enduring patterns of thoughts feelings and behaviour that are expressed in different circumstances.
What is self regulation
means setting goals, evaluating performance and adjusting behaviours to achieve goals in the context of ongoing feedback. Cognitive -social theories view personality as problem solving to obtain goals.
What are trait theories
Are based on the concept of traits, emotional, cognitive and behavioural tendencies that constitute underlying dimensions of personality on which individuals vary. Using factor analysis, different theorists have proposed different theories of the major factors that constitute personality.
What are Humanistic Theories
Theories that focus on aspects of personality that are distinctly human, not shared by other animals, such as how to find meaning in life and how to be true to oneself.
What is Existential Personality theory
The theory stresses the importance of subjective experience and the individuals quest for the meaning in life.
What is the cultural pattern apporach
sees personality as primarily as an accommodation to culture.
What is personal value.
This refers to the importance individuals attach to various outcomes or potential outcomes.
What are competices
Competences are skills and abilities used to solve problems
What is heriability
The idea that much of a personality is inherited. Studies of twins reared together and reared apart show evidence for the heritability of certain traits.
What is existential
existential personality theories stress the importance of subjective experience and the individuals quest for meaning in life.
Freud Structural model
Distinguishes ID, superego and ego. Unconscious strategies aimed at minimizing unpleasant emotions or maximizing pleasant emotions are called defense mechanisms.
