Exclusive Economic Zone
An international 200-nautical-mile (370km) area that was formalized in 1982 in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ( UNCLOS ); of tremendous significance to Oceania because it allows countries with small land area but many scattered islands, such as Tonga and The Cook islands to lay claim to immense areas of Ocean.

A U.N convention, formalized in 1982, established a 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) for all nations, while also providing for the protection of international waters and the creation of rights of passage through key strategic waterways throughout the world.
