Exclusive Economic Zone
An international 200-nautical-mile (370km) area that was formalized in 1982 in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ( UNCLOS ); of tremendous significance to Oceania because it allows countries with small land area but many scattered islands, such as Tonga and The Cook islands to lay claim to immense areas of Ocean.
