Self-determination theory
distinguished between different types of goals and the various reasons or goals that lead to action
3 types of motivation that can fulfill 3 different psychological needs
- Autonomy = experiencing action as free choice without outside influence
- Competence = master new challenges or perfect skills
- Relatedness = form meaningful bonds with others
Achievement motivation
the drive to perform at high levels d to accomplish significant goals
2 ways in which people’s reasons for wanting to succeed can be very different
- positive orientation = motivation for success
2. negative orientation = fear of failure
Achievement goal theory
focuses on how success is defined, which is based on:
- individuals personal definition of success
- characteristics of the achievement situation
Mastery goal orientation
focus on personal improvement, putting in maximum effort, and perfecting new skills
Performance goal orientation
perform better than others, with hopes of using minimal effort
Those with high need in achievement are likely to outperform those with low need in achievement when:

Three basic types of conflict according to Kurt Lewin

- Avoidance-avoidance conflict = two undesirable alternatives
- Approach-avoidance conflict = attracted to and repelled by the same goals
