Chapter 11 - Getting Evidence into Practice Flashcards
Why are health professionals slow to adopt evidence‐based practice?
Barriers include:
- difficulty finding evidence
- unfamiliarity with research methods
- lack of confidence in interpreting findings
- lack of time
- resistance to change or the concept of evidence-based practice (EBP).
- Organisational challenges like lack of support and resources, and a culture that devalues research, also play a role
How can we encourage individuals to implement evidence‐based practice?
- Make evidence easily accessible and present it in plain, readable language.
- Motivation is key; when clinicians see the benefits of new evidence, they are more likely to adopt it
How can organisations support evidence‐based practice?
Organisations can foster a culture that values EBP by:
- providing strong leadership
- supporting decision-making based on evidence
- developing care pathways that integrate evidence-based recommendations
How can we include the patient perspective in evidence‐based practice?
- Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)
- focus on what matters to patients
- Shared decision-making
- decision aids help patients participate in choosing their care based on evidence and their preferences
