Great Famine
In 1315 to 1322 storms ruined the wheat, oat, and hay crops. One in Four people were poor leading to scarcity and starvation.
Black Death
Flees on black rats brought disease that infected people and do to harsh unsanitary living conditions 1/3 of the population was killed.
Flagellants
A group of religious people that whipped and scourged themselves to pay for their sins
Hundred Years’ War
From 1337 to 1453 a depute over land, and French throne led to England and France fighting through 116 years.
Representative Assemblies
These were the English Parliament. These were the first representative institutions of modern democratic nations.
Babylonian Captivity
A period in the churches where Philip pressured the Pope Clement V to settle permanently in Avignon.
Great Schism
A great divide between the Catholic church leading to the excommunication and development of two separate popes which remained divided until 1417
Conciliarists
People who believed that reforming the church would be best achieved through periodic assemblies who would represent all Christians.
Confraternities
Voluntary groups in which were organized to do activities like a club such as dancing or praying.
Jacquerie
After the war this uprising occurred between the peasants and the nobles who went around and slaughtered nobles.
English Peasants’ Revolt
This was a revolution due to the ignited taxation on adult males. More nobles were slaughtered and tax collectors were killed.
Statute of Kilkenny
A law the English imposed on Ireland stating there would be no marriage between immigrants and natives. The Irish had to have English names and speak English.
