Chapter 11 - Fisheries Management Flashcards
sustainable fishing
Fishing up to maximum sustainable yield so future fish stocks are not at risk of being depleted
Maximum sustainable yield (MSY)
Intensity of fishing that can be carried out w/out reducing future populations
Common fisheries policy of 1970
Fish and coastal areas apart from small zones at each country would become communal resource for all European Economic Union. Also included subsidy system where if fish price fell, fishing fleets were given money for shortfall

Emits sound waves reflected by air in fish swim bladders
Purse seine
Seine net used to capture pelagic shoals of fish. Has series of ropes, which can be drawn shut at the bottom, to close and trap fish before hauling on board
