Chapter 11- Biodiversity Flashcards
What is biodiversity and habitat biodiversity?
Biodiversity- the variety of living organisms present in an area
Habitat biodiversity- the number of different habitats found within an area
What are the 4 main habitats in the UK?
Sand dunes
Streams
Meadows
Woodlands
What is species richness and species eveness?
Species richness- the number of different species living in an particular area
Species evenness- a comparison of the number of individuals of each species living in a community
What does sampling allow for?
Allows for generalised assessments of biodiversity or average characteristics of a species
What are the different types of samples?
Random sampling- sampling made by chance and less bias
Non- random sampling-
Systematic- samples taken at fixed intervals
Opportunistic- samples are chosen however data is biased and not representative
Stratified- different areas are identified and sampled in proportion to their part of a habitat as a whole
What are the different sampling techniques?
Sweeping nets- for organisms living in shrubbery/ long grass/ trees and used to catch insects
Pitfall trap- used to catch crawling ground and need to be covered to prevent small mammals falling in
Pooter- used to catch small insects
Tullgren funnel- small insects/ insects that live in soil or leaf litter
Kick sampling- small aquatic organisms
