Chapter 11 (Animal development and diversity) Flashcards
Define: Cleavage
The splitting of cell in mitosis to form a multi-cellular hollow ball called the Blastula.
Define: Gastrulation.
Part of the embryo folds inward. This will form the embryonic tissues such as the ectoderm and the endoderm.
Define: Larva
A sexually immature stage which is usually morphologicaly different from the adult. The larva usually eats different food to the adult and lives in a different habitat.
Define:Metamorphosis
The process in which an animal larva is transformed into the adult.
Define: Grade
A group of animal species that share the same level of organisational complexity.
How many plains in a radially symmetrical animal?
Many
How many plains in a bilateral symmetrical animal?
One
Define: Dorsal and ventral
Dorsal= Top side Ventral= Bottom side
Define: Anterior and posterior
Anterior= Head end Posterior= Tail end
Define: Cephilization
The evolutionary trend associated with bilateral animals in which the sensory equipment is on the anterior end. also include having the central nervous system in the head then extending down towards the posterior end as a nerve cord.
Name three germ layers.
Ectoderm
Endoderm
Mesoderm
What is an animal with only two germ layers called?
Diploblastic
