Chapter 11 All Sections Flashcards
Pressure
the force applied perpendicular to the surface of an object per unit area over which that force is distributed.
Pascal
A unit of pressure equal to 1 newton per square meter
Fluid
A material that can easily flow
Barometer
An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure
Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume
Buoyant force
The upward force exerted by a fluid on a submerged object
Archimedes’ principal
states that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and acts in the upward direction at the center of mass of the displaced fluid.
Pascal’s principal
is a principle in fluid mechanics that states that a pressure change occurring anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted throughout the fluid such that the same change occurs everywhere.
Hydraulic system
A system that multiplies force by transmitting pressure from a small surface area
Bernoulli’s principal
states that as the speed of a moving fluid (liquid or gas) increases, the pressure within the fluid decreases.
Lift
An upward force
