Great Famine
A terrible famine in 1315-1322 that hit much of Euroupe after a period of climate change
Black Death
A plague that first struck Europe in 1347 and killed perhaps 1/3 of the population
Flagellants
People who believed the plauge was God’s punishment and sought to do penance (whipping themselves)
Hundred Years’ War
A war between England and France from 1337 to 1453 with political and economic causes and consequences
Representative Assembilies
Meetings of lords and wealthy urban residents that flourished in many European countries from 1250 to 1450
Babylonia Captivity
A period between 1309 to 1376 where popes resided in Avignon rather than Rome. Also refers to the seventy years Hebrews were kept captive in Babylon
Great Schism
A division of church leadership from 1378 to 1417 where there were two, then three popes
Conciliartists
People who believed the authority of the Roman Church should rest in a general council (clergy, theologians, and laypeople) not just the pope
Confraternities
Voluntary lay groups organized by occupation, devotional preference, neighborhood or charitably
Jaquerie
A massive rise of peasants in Frace (1358) protesting heavy taxation
English Peasant’s Revolt
Revolt of English peasants in 1381 in response to changing economic conditions
Statue of Kilkenny
Law issued in 1366 that discriminated against Irish forbidding marriage between English and Irish, requiring use of the English language and denying Irish access to certain offices
