Second wave feminism
International Women’s day created by the UN in 1977
First Women’s Liberation meeting in 1970
Demonstrations include miss world in 1970 and London/ Liverpool in 1971 for equal pay and equal 24 hour nurseries
Radical- believed women were oppressed by the patriarchal society and wanted reproductive rights
Socialist- wanted women to have financial independence
First rape crisis centre was opened in London in 1976
Domestic violence Act 1976 allowed women to take out restraining orders on violent partners

Due to increased social alienation for the youth with stagflation and political unrest. Also by the end of the decade 4/10 of 18-25’s were unemployed
‘Expression of despair’- Daily Mirror
Sex Pistols (1975), The Clash (1976), and The Slits (1976)
Anti establishment with a nihilistic attitude
1977 ‘God Save the Queen’ was released by the Sex Pistols which was banned by the BBC but still charted at #2 showing how the population was turning more anti establishment
Caused moral panic when Johnny Rotten swore on national tv at 6.25pm
‘SEX’ opened by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren (1974-76) clothing boutique in Carnaby street
Aims were to shock and upset society which they succeeded in
However their music wasn’t all successful as songs from the film ‘Grease’ still topped the charts

Skinheads

A

Rock against racism (1976) started due to comments by Eric Clapton which supported Enoch Powell which resulted in ‘two tone bands’ which brought together black and white musicians and listeners. A demonstration in Trafalgar Square in April 1978 attracted 100,000
Increase in Hooliganism within sport which shows unrest and the breaking down of the permissive society
Emerged from mod culture
Madness (1976) and the Specials (1977)
Initially apolitical although some associated themselves with the National Front and Hooliganism like the Chelsea Headhunters
Sometimes behind violent attacks on people from other ethnic backgrounds like ‘P*ki-bashing’

Environmentalism in politics

A

Councils cancelled big infrastructure projects like sections of the M25 and the North Circular by the London Council in 1973
Campaign against DDT led it to be banned in 1984
Water Act 1974 protected Great British Waters
Endangered Species Act 1976 restricted imports/exports of certain animals/plants
Ministry of Housing and Local Government replaced by Department of Environment under Heath
Royal Commission on Environmental pollution established by Wilson in 1970
The ‘People’s Party’ was changed to the Green Party which gave environmentalism a say in British Politics
Ecology party fielded 53 candidates in the 1979 election and took almost 40,000 votes
Third Sector organisations like RSPCA, RSPB, and the NT became more prominent
