Population

Sample
A part or a subset of the population that you look at/study
Parameter
A number that describes the population
Statistic
A number that describes the sample
Random sample
Each member of the population has an equal chance of getting selected
Self-selected sample
Members of the population can volunteer to be in the sample
Systematic sample
A rule is used to select members of a population. For instance, selecting every other person.
Stratified sample
population is divided into smaller groups that share a similar characteristic. A sample is then randomly selected from each group.
Cluster sample
a population is divided into groups, called clusters. All of the members in one or more of the clusters are selected.
Convenience sample
Only people nearby or easy to reach are surveyed
Experiment
imposes treatment on subjects
Observational study
observes subjects without getting involved
