emotion?
a mental feeling state that directs our attention and guides behaviour.
Motivation?
a driving force that initiates and directs behaviour
-ex. hunger, or social goals.
what are the basic emotions?
anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise
secondary emotions: Cognitive appraisal?
allow us to experience a much larger and more complex set of secondary emotions
secondary emotions: valence?
this determines if they are pleasant or unpleasant feelings or emotions.
THE CANNON-BARD THEORY OF
EMOTION?
The experience of an emotion is accompanied by physiological arousal
-The experience of the emotion (“I’m afraid”) occurs alongside the experience of the arousal (“my heart is beating fast”)
THE JAMES-LANGE THEORY OF
EMOTION?
Our experience of an emotion is the result of the arousal that we experience.
- emotion depends on the arousal
THE TWO-FACTOR THEORY OF
EMOTION?
the arousal that we experience is the same across all emotions.
MISATTRIBUTION OF AROUSAL?
the tendency for people to incorrectly label the source of arousal that they are experiencing.
EXCITATION TRANSFER?
when people who are already experiencing arousal from one event tend also to experience unrelated emotions more strongly
Facial feedback hypothesis?
proposes that the movement of our facial muscles can trigger corresponding emotions
-ex the pencil experiment In class.
Compound emotions?
emotions constructed by combining primary emotions
-ex. angrily surprised, happily disgusted
intrapersonal emotions?
the effects of emotion on individuals that occur physically inside their bodies and psychologically inside their minds.
- ex, if you feel fear, your body then dilates your pupils an expands your visual field.
interpersonal emotions?
the effects of one’s emotion on others, or to the relationship between oneself and others.
