It would be embarrassing to others - result in slaves being watched more - he was very fortunate to escape.
Why does he look down upon the people of the Underground Railroad?
Masters, not slaves, are enlightened by it. It makes the master more watchful and captive of his slaves.

He has to pay $6 a week so he must make at least that amount.

He stays out of trouble. He became lonely, homeless, and hungry.
