murder
intentional killing of another person; recognized as having two classes: first- and second-degree murder
first-degree murder
killing of another person that is planned and deliberate, the killing of a law enforcement agent, or a killing that is related to committing or attempting other crimes that are particularly offensive to society (hostage taking, sexual assault, hijacking an airplane)
second-degree murder
intentional killing of another person that is not first-degree murder
homicide
first-degree murder, second-degree murder, man slaughter, or infanticide. deaths caused by criminal negligence, suicide, and accidental or justifiable homicide are not included
manslaughter
homicide, or the killing of another person, by committing an unlawful act with only a general intent (speeding and killing a pedestrian, giving a lethal punch in a sudden provoked brawl)
infanticide
the killing of an infant shortly after birth by the mother because she is not fully recovered from the effects of giving birth (post-partum depression) and her mind is disturbed
thrill killing
impulsive slaying of a stranger as an act of recklessness
serial murderer
an individual who kills three or more persons in three or more separate events
mass murderers
individuals who kill four or more victims in a single, violent outburst
spree killers
individuals who kill multiple victims over a relatively short span of time and often follow no discernible pattern
