chapter 10 urogenital diseases Flashcards
The ureters, bladder, and urethra function primarily
as
transport vehicles for urine formed in the kidneys.
Formation and excretion of urine is the primary function
of the
renal nephron
the kidney plays an integral role in the
balance of various essential body functions, including the
following:
Acid base balance • Electrolyte balance • Control of blood pressure with renin • Formation of red blood cells (RBCs) • Activation of vitamin D and calcium balance
The upper urinary tract consists of
kidneys and ureters.
The kidneys are located in
posterior upper abdominal
cavity in a space behind the peritoneum (retroperitoneal
space)
anatomic location of the kidney?
in front of
and on both sides of the vertebral column at the level of T11
to L3
The lower urinary tract consists of the
bladder and urethra.
From the renal pelvis, urine is moved by
peristalsis to the
ureters and into the bladder.
location of the bladder
directly behind the symphysis
pubis and is used for storage and excretion of urine
it is connected to the bladder and serves as a channel
through which urine is passed from the bladder to the outside
of the body.
