Chapter 10 - Transport Systems and Their Spatial Distribution Flashcards
What are transport systems?
Transport is one of the most important human activities as it connects people between different locations. It provides people with opportunities for social interaction and economic trade.
A transport system consist of 3 components / charateristics:
Networks
Infrastructure
Modes
Describe the network component of transport systems?
A transport network are made up of nodes that are linked by routes
- Node: Represents a location that provices entry to the transport network
- Route: Represents the path for travel between the nodes.
The more noes and routes there are in the transport network within a city, the denser the transport network becomes - makes it easier for people to reach locations and engage in different activities.
Describe the Infrastructure component of transport systems?
Fixed installations, structures, and networks that provide a framework for the movement of people and goods.
e.g:
Roads
Railway
Bridges
Walkways
Bicycle Lanes
Signages
Describe the Modes component of transport systems.
The Modes component of transport systems refers to the different ways that people and goods can be transported.
Some of the modes include:
Rail Transport
Road Transport
Air Transport
Sea Transport
Pipeline Transport
Cable Transport
Human-powered Transport
The quality of the infrastructure influences the reliability and performance of the transport system are determined by:
Coverage: Availability and reach of infrastructure
Capacity: Number of people and goods that can be moved
Frequency: Number of occurunces of a service
Convenience: Ease of movement
Enviromental Sustainability: Enviromental impact
note:this are all the characteristics of transport system
What are the types of nodes in cities?
There are major and minor nodes.
the major nodes are terminal, a facility where passengers and freight either originate or terminate in the transportation process. There are also major nodes such as interchanges: important points of transfer within or between transportation networks of different modes to ensure continuity of trafic flow.
The minor nodes are bus stops, each mrt train stops, taxi stands
What are activities in cities and why are nodes located here.
The activities in cities are finance and banking, manufacturing, retail, leisure, residental, education and the reason why nodes are located here is because it is so that more people can access them
What is accessibility?
Accessibility is the ease of reaching destinations or activities
Why are nodes located at places with high levels of accessibility?
So that many different destinations can be reached with ease within a given time frame and cost.
Generally, short travel time and low travel cost indicate high accessibilty
Why are transport systems located in cities?
Transport systems enable the movement of people as well as goods and services
Why are transport systems comonly found in cities?
Movement of people such as:
.Facilitate everyday movement of people
.Allows people to commute to work
.The physical separation of residential areas and employment makes it necessary for people to commute from their home to their workplaces daily.
.Gives people access to social activities that will improve people’s social and emotional well-being.
.Makes it more convenient for commuters to reach the amenities
Movement for goods and services such as:
.Ensures the functioning of economic activities by supplying goods and services from where they are produced to where they are consumed.
.E-commerce made transport of goods and services more vital.
.Important services delivered using transport system for daily needs – water supply trucks during droughts
What are the reasons for transport sytems in cities?
It supports connection between transport modes such as unimodal and intermodal journeys.
Note: Efficient, seamless movement, more destinations can be reached, passengers do not get lost and goods do not go missing - however, a lot of careful planning is needed.
What is unimodal?
Unimodal involves only one transport mode
What is intermodal?
Involving thenuse of two or more transport modes
What are connections?
Connecitons can be direct (point to point) or indirect (hub and spoke)
