Chapter 10 Response and Size Up Flashcards
Response
involves a series of actions that begin when a crew is dispatched to an alarm and end with the crews arrival at the emergency incident
Response actions
- receiving alarm
- donning PPE
- Mounting apparatus
- transporting equipment and personnel to the emergency incident quickly safely
- Follow SOG and SOP
Size up
systematic process of information gathering and situation evaluation that begins when an alarm is received.
IC’s are ultimately responsible and FF should also be involved in the process of gathering and processing information.
Alarm Receipt
begins when an alarm is received at the fire station.
transmitted through radio, telephone, or public address systems.
AFD uses what type of Dispatch system?
Enhanced 911 system “AFD whats the address of the emergency?”
EFD codes
Emergency Fire Dispatch 52- fire alarm 59 - fuel spill 69- structure fire 71- vehicle- fire
MPD codes
Medical Priority Dispatch 4- assault 9- cardiac arrest 27- shooting/stabbing 29- traffic accident
Riding the Apparatus
- Don PPE before mounting apparatus
- Don SCBA after arriving on scene or if apparatus has seat mounted units.
- Secure tools
- Be careful mounting and dismounting apparatus
- wear seat belt
- use ear protection
- limit conversation think ahead
Personnel Accountability Tags (PATS)
include FF name, ID number, and photograph, maybe Med Hx allergies etc. AFD no longer uses this method. PATS are usually collected from unit and given to IC
Controlling Utilities
- Electrical- fatal electrical shock
- Water- water damage and structural collapse cut off main
- Gas- explosions- Propane, single shut off valve quarter turn valve
Size Up
is the process of initially evaluating and emergency situation to determine which actions need to be taken and which actions can be undertaken safely
Facts
bits of accurate information obtained from various sources.
- time of day
- temperature
- weather conditions
- addresses
extension
spread of a fire to exposed buildings
pre incident plan
can be especially helpful during size up because it contains significant information about a structure
Seat of fire indication
smoke limits visibility a crackling sound or the sensation of heat comping from one direction may indicate the seat of the fire (main area) blistering paint and smoke seeping through cracks can lead FF to a hidden fire burning within a wall
