Chapter 10: Quasi & non-experimental designs Flashcards
Characteristics of quasi-experiment
No random assignment
There is a control group or multiple measures
Characteristics of non-experiment
No random assignment
No control group or multiple measures
Between groups non & quasi-experimental designs (3)
1) Differential design (N)
2) Post-test only NECG design (N)
3) Pre-test/post-test NECG design (Q)
Within-groups non & quasi-experimental designs (2)
1) One group pretest-posttest design (N)
2) Interrupted time series design (Q)
Differential design
Simply compares pre-existing groups to find a difference on the variable of interest
Post-test only NECG design
Compares those who received treatment to those who did not
No manipulation/control over who is exposed to the treatment
Pre-test/post-test NECG design
Adds pre-test measurement for both groups
Can determine how similar the groups are prior to administering the treatment to experimental group
If there is post-treatment differences between groups, more confident that it is due to the treatment
One group pretest-posttest design
2 observations are made for each participants, one before and one after treatment
Interrupted time series design
Adds control by making a series of observations for each participants, some before and some after treatment
Developmental research designs (def. + types (2))
Non-experimental research designs that are used to study changes in behaviour that relate to age
1) Cross-sectional research design
2) Longitudinal research design
Cross-sectional research design
Between-groups design in which different age groups are compared on the variable of interest
Cross-sectional research design advantages (2)
1) Time efficient
2) No long-term cooperation required
Cross-sectional research design disadvantages (2)
1) Cohort/generation effects
2) Individual changes are not assessed
Cohort/generation effects
Differences between groups attributed to characteristics or experiences other than age
Longitudinal research design
Within-groups design that measures a variable in the same group over time
