Acetaminophen
b) Acetaminophen
i) Analgesic and antipyretic effects
ii) Little to no antiinflammatory effects
iii) Available over-the-counter (OTC) and in combination products with opioids
Tramadol
i) Centrally acting analgesic with a dual mechanism of action
(1) Weak bond to mu opioid receptors
(2) Inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin
ii) Not classified as a controlled substance (CIV)
iii) Indicated for moderate to moderately severe pain
iv) Adverse effects similar to those of opioids
v) Careful use in patients taking SSRIs, MAOIs, neuroleptics
