chapter 10 - nervous system Flashcards
function of the nervous system?
it enables organisms to react to their surroundings and coordinates behaviour
the parts of the central nervous system (CNS)?
brain and spinal cord
why are reflex actions described as rapid and
automatic?
they don’t involve the conscious part of the brain
why are reflex actions important?
for survival and to prevent damage to the body
pathway of a nervous response?
stimulus -> receptor -> sensory neurone -> coordinator -> motor neurone -> effector -> response SRSCMER
what is a synapse?
a gap between two neurones, allowing impulses to cross
function of neurones?
to carry electrical impulses around the body
what is homeostatis?
maintenance of a constant internal environment
conditions controlled in homeostatis?
- body temperature
- blood glucose concentration
- water levels
things all control systems include?
- receptors
- coordination centres
- effectors
whats the coordination centre?
where the impulses get processed (brain)
whats the effector?
muscles or glands that bring responses to the stimulus
whats the receptor?
cells that detect changes in the internal or external environment (stimuli)
two things can an effector be?
muscle or glands
how do you calculate the range of results?
largest or highest result taking the smallest or lowest result away
4 stages of synapses?
- the impulses travel along the sensory neurone
- impulses come across neurotransmitters and binds to them
- the impulses are diffused across the synapse
- impulses bind to the neurotransmitters on the motor neurone and the impulses continue to travel
how is the reflex arc different to the normal nervous pathway?
impulses dont travel to the coordination centre
why does this make it quicker?
we dont have to spend time thinking about what to do
why do we need a quicker response?
to protect us from hurting ourselves or causing damage to our body
