Hierarchy of needs and how can this framework be used
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a description of the needs that motivate human behavior.
It can be used in nursing , student wellness and senior care
Ex: Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is in every nurses’ toolbox for setting patient care priorities. … Applying this model to nursing practice would suggest that when nurses do not feel that their work environment needs are being met, they will be less motivated and less likely to progress to the higher-level functions.
HR application : Physiological needs
- Reasonable work hours
- Rest and lunch breaks
Result: employee is working for wages only and are still likely disengaged (survival)
HR safety needs:
- Benefits
- Safe work environment
- the job is necessary though may not like it
- still not engaged (security)
HR belonging:
- Promote group work and collaboration
- Facilitate social activities
- somewhat engaged “I know that I’m a part of something bigger!” (belonging)
HR esteem needs
- Continuing education & training
- Recognition program for employees’ achievements
- likely engaged “I’m a vital part of the workplace”
HR self actualization
1.Creative , challenging work
2.Participation in decision making
3.work autonomy
-highly engaged b/c :
“What can I do to help coworkers”
“How can I aspire others”
Obstacles for growth
- the higher the need in hierarchy, the weaker its potency
- inadequate socialization
- gender role training (what are boys taught, what are girls taught)
Desacrilization
any process that distorts human nature and depicts it as less marvelous and dignified than it is
Jonah complex
the fear of success which prevents self-actualization, or the realization of one’s potential. It is the fear of one’s own greatness, the evasion of one’s destiny, or the avoidance of exercising one’s talents.
Obstacles to self actualization
- poor habits
- ego defended
- desacralization
- the Jonah complex
Inadequate socialization
If people failed to play their expected roles or behaved strangely
What are safety needs
Security, predictability
Ex/ psychological safety
Belongingness
When the individual is driven for affiliation
Psychological needs
Survival needs : Air,water
What happens to us physiologically if these basic needs aren’t met = it will dominate an individuals life .
Esteem needs
Sense of accomplishment : respect, self esteem , status
