Chapter 10: For exam 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Easter egg: How many people followed Miley Cyrus in 2012?
A
14 Million
2
Q
What is construct validity?
A
How well the variables were measured and manipulated
3
Q
What is a manipulation check?
A
- An extra DV that helps validate (check) the measure
- To make sure you’re affecting what you want
- Ex. Making sure a stress paradigm is increasing stress by validating with corticosterone levels
4
Q
What is a pilot study?
A
- A simple study using different participants to confirm the experiment works
- Is a model before the larger study to check the basics
5
Q
What is external validity?
A
- The hardest for experiemental work because lab settings are artificial, so generalizing to other people is hard
- Labs often use convenience sampling, such as college students who are: 18-22 yo, smarter than average, more money, etc… so is this truly generalizable
can replicate with similar experiments + stimuli to help counteract
6
Q
What is statistical validity?
A
- For determining how large the effect is, and how big is the difference between the groups
- To measure, you look at data/stats
- Calculate effect size (d). Large d=large effect size.
- Confidence interval: 95% conrident we get a score in this range (if the effect is true). Shows the effect is real and meaningful
