Allergen?
Something that causes an allergy.
Anaphylaxis?
A severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, which affects body systems such as breathing, the heart and circulation, the digestive system and the skin.
Food allergy?
A condition where the body’s immune system reacts unuseally to specific foods and causes a range of mild to servere symptoms.
Food intolerance?
A long-term condition where certain foods cause someone to feel unwell and have a range of a symptoms; it is useally not life threatening.
Visible symptoms of an allergic reaction:
- The skin becomes flushed and red.
- A raised, red/pink itchy rash appears on the skin (called hives).
- The skin swells - often on the face.
- They may have difficulty with breathing and will wheeze and cough.
Invosible symptoms of having an allergic reaction:
- The mouth, tongue and throat swell so the person cannot breathe, swallow or speak properly.
- Pain in the abdomen, nausea, and vomiting.
- They may collapse amd become unconcious - this can the lead to death.
Common foods that cause allergic reactions:
- Eggs
- Kiwi
- Strawberries
- Fish and shelfish
- Peanuts
Examples of a food intolerance:
- Lactose Intolerance
- Coeliac Disease
Lactose intolerance
- Lactose is the natural sugar that is found in milk or milk products.
- People who have it can’t digest it normally, so the bacteria in the large intestine break down
instead. - This causes a lot of gas, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and nausea.
