Emotional development: 0-2 months

What is temperament?
Inborn individual differences in quality and intensity of emotional reaction that forms the foundations of personality
What makes up an infant’s temperament?
Behavioural styles which are fairly stable across situations and are biologically based
What are the three patterns of temperament?
1) The “easy child”
2) The “difficult child”
3) The “slow-to-warm-up child”
What are some characteristics for the “easy child?”
- Happy
- Adjust well to change
- Approach new events positively
- Regular routine of eating and sleeping
- Most common
What are some characteristics for the “difficult child?”
- Irritable
- Adjusts slowly to change
- Approach new events negatively
- Irregular routine of eating and sleeping
- Least common
What are some characteristics for “slow-to-warm-up child?”
- Starts off as unresponsive or responds with a low-key reaction to new things
- Tends to be negative in mood
- Takes a little time to warm up to new things
