Free-rider
The name for a person who believes many groups healthily compete for access to decision-makers.
pluralist
Benefits of groups that are available to members and nonmembers such as public safety or clean air.
Collective good
Direct communication between organized interests and lawmakers in an attempt to influence policy.
Inside lobbying
A small, informal, stable group made up of three components–congressional committees, the bureaucracy, and interest groups–who seek to promote policies beneficial to a particular interest.
iron triangle
An informal, open network of public officials and lobbyists who come together in response to a proposed policy in an area of interest to each of them.
Issue network
A political movement that begins from the bottom up usually involving citizens who are concerned about a particular issue.
grassroots movement
Indirect lobbying where interest groups use the media to encourage the public to put pressure on lawmakers.
Outside lobbying
A benefit that generally accrues to a narrow segment of society. This is also known as a private good.
