Chapter 10 Flashcards
True Experiment
Scientist has complete control over all aspects
Quasi Experiment
An experiment that does not meet the requirements of a true experiment.
Researcher has some but not all control.
Factors
Independent variables of an experiment
Level
The value of an independent variable
Condition
A group or treatment in an experiment
Treatment
Another word for the condition of an experiment
Order effects
Change in a subjects behaviour based on the position in which a condition appears within an experiment.
Sequence effects
Changes in a subject’s performance resulting from interactions among the conditions themselves.
Counterbalancing
Controlling for order & sequence effects by arranging that the subjects experience the various conditions in different orders.
Limitations of counterbalancing
- Can disguise the treatment mean
- adds extra source of variability within each treatment
- does not work with asymmetrical sequence effects
Block randomization
Control procedure in which the order of conditions is randomized, but each condition is presented once before they are randomized.
Reverse counterbalancing
method of control in which the conditions are presented in order the first time and then backwards the second time.
Balanced Latin Square
Each subject experiences the order of the conditions differently.
2 elements of a good experimental design
1) existence of a control group/control condition
2) random allocation of subjects to groups
