Chapter 10 Flashcards
Valence Bond Theory
Based on the principle that covalent bonds form from the overlap of atomic orbitals on the bonding atoms
What does Valence Bond Theory Explain?
The differences in bond lengths and bond energies in molecules
What is an Atomic Orbital?
s, p, d, f
What is a Hybrid Orbital?
Mix of atomic orbitals of an atom (sp3)
What is a Molecular Orbital?
Mix of atomic orbitals from different atoms
HOMO
Highest energy occupied MO
LUMO
Lowest energy unoccupied MO
Is Hybridization a real concept?
No it is only Theoretical
Where do sigma bonds overlap?
End to end
Where do pi bonds overlap?
Side by side
Which is stronger sigma or pi?
Sigma, it has a greater overlap
How do you make a pi bond?
Need unhybridized p orbitals
Constructive Interference
Phases of the wavefunction are the same
Energy is lower, bonding orbital
Destructive Interference
Phases of the wave function are opposite
Energy is higher, antibonding orbital
Bond Order
Higher bond order indicates a more stable bond
