Cubist, surrealist, and portrait photographer. Mostly known for his work with portraits. Photo’d artists of all sorts in unconventional ways to display the subjects position, occupation, and status. Exhibition in Philly “Artists Look Like This”.
Arnold Newman
Known for photos containing design, minimalism, scale. Roots in Detroit and Chicago. Eleanor, his wife, was a frequent subject. Was a member of the Detroit Photo Guild.used double exposure photos to create pattern.
Harry Callahan
Famous commercial/fashion photographer. Photod: ‘a corner’, Vogue covers, imperfection, nude studies, Peruvians, New Guinea tribes, Hells Angels, Rockers. Had a portable North light Studio, “luminous tent”.
Irving Penn
Photo’d celebrities. Famous for Jump Photos. Collaborated with Salvidor Dali. Given emergency visa by request of Albert Einstein. Invented his own camera and his own twin reflex camera. Worked with his wife. And has 100 Life Magazine covers. Started American Society of Magazine Photographers.
