Q

Discuss the significant contributions to string teaching by Shinichi Suzuki.

A

Suzuki’s philosophy was that all children have talent. The environment rather than genetic background will determine the success or failure of the student.

Children should be able to learn to play the violin by the same process by which they learn to speak their native language. Imitation.

Not every child is expected to become a world-class violinist, a child can develop that year, coordination of hands and arms and a cultivation of sensitivity, discipline, memory and industry.

The curriculum is set up to cover techniques step-by-step through pieces that are appealing to the students and their families.

Beginning lessons at an early age with parental Involvement.

Learning each new skill a small piece at a time through listening, imitation, review and positive reinforcement from the teacher and family.

Letting each child progress at his or her own pace.

Supplementing private lessons with group classes.

A

Rolland produced a large and detailed volume of work devoted to teaching strings. 14 books.

He produced 14 color films, the book The Teaching of Action in String Playing, and wall charts/photographs of basic techniques plus music and recordings.

The book and films take the students from the first lesson, and great emphasis is placed on developing a comfortable, relaxed, and, as nearly as possible, ideal position for both the violin and the bow.

Q

Discuss the significant contributions to string teaching by Samuel Applebaum (1904-1986)

A

Samuel Applebaum was a teacher and pedagogue who turned out an immense amount of material.

His publications range from simple to moderately difficult material in from simple to advanced performance material in a series of films covering various aspects of string instruction.

There are three 10-minutes color videos in this series. 1) Rote games for the development of good playing position in control of the bow. 2) Rote games to strengthen and develop facility for both hands. 3) Developing an orderly mind through wrote exercises for rhythm, sight reading and intonation.

The Applebaum string method is a three volume work published for violin, viola, cello and bass with piano accompaniment and a teacher’s manual.

The instruments play together throughout the book. The method begins with the series of rote games. The book maybe use for class or individual instruction.

The aim is to permit the student to memorize sensations that will help develop specific technical skills.

A

Havas was a child prodigy who studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest. She made debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of 17.

After married she withdrew from professional life and developed a New Approach to Violin Playing.

The approach focuses on the violin but is applicable to other instruments.

The approach focuses on the violin and

Her aim in the approach is to develop a relaxed tension free, anxiety free method of playing, which is related to the totally integrated system of natural balance in the body. Her number one emphasis is balance not strength. For example, the right pressure in the right spot at the right time.

Q

Do you find yourself in agreement or disagreement with the theories and practice advocated by these pedagogues? Discuss.

A

Yes I am in agreement with these pedagogues.

But I believe that all children have talent. Suzuki

I believe that an emphasis should be placed on a playing style/ approach that is comfortable, relaxed, with good posture as advocated by Rolland in Havas.

I believe in the rote Approach of Suzuki and Applebaum.
