Short Answer #1
Explain what the Homestead Act gave to settlers & what conditions there were. Why would the government choose this policy rather than selling the land to the highest bidder?
-govt. gave 160-acre pieces of land to people who would pay a small filing fee & farm the land for 5 years
-govt. did this an incentive for people to move west, settle, and raise crops
-open to large variety of people (widows, men, African Americans, etc.) to help promote equality
-purpose was to increase settlement, not make money
-highest bidders probably wouldn’t have settled & developed communities the way the average homesteader would
Short Answer #2
Who signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie? Did both sides obey its terms in the years after it was signed? Explain.
-U.S. govt. and Plains Indians signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie
-U.S. did not obey the terms
-treaty said certain lands would be set aside for the Plains Indians forever, BUT gold was discovered on land set aside for Cheyenne and Arapaho
-miners came in & govt. forced Plains Indians to sign a new treaty giving up some of their land
Short Answer #3
How did the expansion of ranching lead to the growth of new towns in the West?
-ranching encouraged new towns to develop in the West
-as ranchers drove cattle through the West (north to the trains), businesses developed to provide what they needed
-businesses offered goods & services cowhands needed like supplies, food, holding pens for cattle until they could be shipped
Short Answer #4
Describe how the principle of supply and demand influenced and benefited John D. Rockefeller’s oil business.
-to eliminate competition from other oil companies, Rockefeller drastically lowered his prices
-lower prices increased demand for oil
-Rockefeller’s low prices meant everyone did business w/him rather than competition–rivals went out of business
-Rockefeller was then only one left to provide oil and benefit from increased demand
